Which rings cannot be reduced. Is it possible to reduce a wedding ring at home or what does the patch have to do with it? Correction of ring size by reduction is carried out in two ways

All girls love to wear jewelry. Very often, men give gold or silver rings as a gift to their lovely girls. Sometimes it happens that men make mistakes with the size and may give a ring that is too large. The situation is unpleasant, but completely solvable. All you have to do is contact experienced jewelers, and they will adjust the size of the ring to your finger.

Reducing a gold ring decorated with precious stones on your own can lead to unpleasant consequences for you, since you do not have enough knowledge and skills and you risk simply ruining a beautiful piece of jewelry.

Where can I get a ring reduction done in Moscow?

Professional ring reduction in Moscow can be done at the Alex Jeweler jewelry workshop. At the moment, this service is in great demand among the specialists of our workshop. This repair is not very complicated and will take about 10-20 minutes. Reducing a diamond ring or a ring with an intricate artistic design can undoubtedly take a little longer.

Advantages of the Alex Jeweler jewelry workshop

The Alex Jeweler workshop employs true professionals and masters of their craft. They have been repairing jewelry of any complexity for many years. You can be confident in the quality of the work performed, because we do not leave seams, adhesions or other marks on the products that indicate the jewelry has been repaired.

Ways to reduce ring size

Jewelers often use two techniques to reduce a ring:

  • cutting out;
  • compression.

Depending on which particular ring needs to be reduced, the technician will choose the appropriate repair method.

Compression is most often used to make a wedding ring smaller. To do this, use a special machine (Buratino), with which the ring is compressed to the desired size. After this the ring is polished

The cut works best for gold and silver rings set with stones. In order to make a ring smaller, a jeweler cuts out a piece of metal from the jewelry and then joins it together.

Ring size reduction cost

The cost of such repairs depends on how the ring will be reduced. If the master uses the cutting technique to reduce the size, the cost of repair will be 400 rubles. If the master believes that compression of the ring would be a suitable option for repairing your product, then the cost of such a reduction will be only 300 rubles.

As you can see, ring reduction, the price of which in the Alex Jeweler jewelry workshop is more than affordable and will help solve the problem of a constantly falling and large ring. In addition, our company provides services for .

Techniques used

Depending on the method that needs to be used when carrying out reduction of rings, price for the service may vary slightly. Today, depending on the complexity of the work, 2 main methods are used:

  • Cutting. To achieve the required ring size the craftsman cuts out a piece of metal from the jewelry (while paying attention to the marks) This technique is mainly used for products with stones. The work will cost 400 rubles.

  • The problem often arises that a given ring or ring, inherited from a grandmother, is slightly larger than the required size. In order not to lose your jewelry during everyday wear, you need to slightly reduce the size of the ring.

To avoid having to downsize your ring, you should try on your jewelry when your fingers are not swollen; if you are purchasing a ring as a gift for someone else, it is best to find out the size or ask for a piece that fits the size.

If you happen to have a large ring made of silver or some inexpensive alloy, you don’t have to go to a jewelry workshop, but rather deal with the problem yourself. It is enough to squeeze the ring a little with your fingers or, for example, with pliers, placing a soft cloth between the jewelry and the jaws of the instrument. The jewelry will be slightly deformed and take on an oval shape, but after resizing this way you are unlikely to lose the ring.

If your gold ring is too big, you need to contact a jewelry shop. The cost of the service for reducing the size of gold jewelry may vary, depending on the complexity of the work. Changing the size of the jewelry will take from 15 minutes to several hours depending on the type of ring. It is known that gold is a plastic material, and under certain conditions it can stretch into a long wire; reducing the diameter of the jewelry by 1 - 1.5 sizes is not a big problem for an experienced jeweler.

One of the easiest ways to reduce the size of a ring is to preheat it and then compress it in a certain way. Another way to reduce the size of a ring is by soldering, in which a small part of the jewelry is separated from the jewelry, and then the ring is reduced to a smaller size using a seam that is almost impossible to notice with the naked eye. During this operation, the master also restores the pattern on the rim of the ring.
In case you want to reduce a ring with precious stones, it is necessary for a specialist to first examine the settings of the diamonds or emeralds adorning the ring. Most often it is possible to narrow the ring without removing the gems, but in some cases it is necessary to first remove and then reinsert the stones. Only an experienced craftsman can determine how firmly the stones are fixed.

When repairing or resizing jewelry, it is best to contact jewelry workshops that operate in jewelry stores, as their employees have extensive experience in such work.

I am again glad to welcome all my regular readers! I am very pleased that you are with me! Guests are welcome too! I hope you and I will become friends too! Today I will tell you whether it is possible to make a wedding ring smaller, how to do it and whether there are any pitfalls in this matter.

So make yourself comfortable, I'm starting.

Old wives' tales or a real threat...

Let me start my story with the reason for choosing such a topic. The other day I met a couple I knew (I was present at their wedding), got to talking, I asked how family life was, and suddenly I noticed that the girl had a plaster on her ring finger, right under the wedding ring. “How did you manage to hurt your finger in such an unusual place?” — I asked. The guys laughed and shared their troubles. During the wedding planner and after it (the fruits of the exercises " Lady fitness") the bride lost so much weight that the symbol of their love began to fall off and the only correct way out of the situation for them was to wear it on a plaster (and not in one layer).

How beautiful this is is not worth saying - in general, it’s good that I caught them on the first “plaster” day. I asked why it couldn't be reduced in diameter? But what I heard in response shocked me. They don't downsize a ring because of a sign! Just imagine!!! I, of course, remembered that there is such a belief that you cannot cut the ring..., well, you understand... but there are ways to reduce it, as they say, without “surgical intervention”. I forgot to tell my “heavily inventive” friends about this and decided to definitely write an article about it.

You probably already know how I feel about signs; I’ve written about them more than once. This is from the series: My husband is returning from a business trip... And returning is a bad omen. And if you really believe in them, then only the good ones, about profit and birds, or good news and spiders, but the things that prophesy separation, losses, and so on are like grandma’s horror stories. Remember that your happiness depends only on you.

    There is always a choice.

If the ring has become too big, you can make it smaller without cutting it. Moreover, you don’t even always have to go to a jewelry maker for this. Sometimes you can do this at home yourself. But more on that later. Now let me tell you, or better yet, show you how you can change the size of your wedding rings and more.

If you don’t know yet, there are two ways:

    • surgical, i.e. cut and remove or insert a piece.

    • a more flexible method in which the product is subjected to heat to make the metal more pliable and reduce it using a mold and a press. The only thing is that this method cannot reduce rings by two sizes. At best, you will be able to “steal” one.

I draw your attention, my dear friends, to the fact that gold or silver items are the easiest to reprocess. But the platinum version will make the master sweat.

I’m generally silent about products with enamel. This is not just difficult to do - it is impossible. The enamel will burst! It is also very difficult to reduce rings with different features:

    1. With engraving. In fact, the process of changing the size of the ring itself is no different from others, but the inscription may suffer. Therefore, before you do it, make sure that the rings fit perfectly, so that you don’t feel offended later (Sergey + Albina = LOVE, and after the procedure, for example, Sergey + Alina = LOVE)
    2. Made from mixed gold. And again, no problems with the process itself, but in the end a seam (joint) may be visible, i.e. Different types of gold can react differently to soldering; it is extremely difficult for a craftsman to select the right “electrode”.
    3. With rocks. The difficulty lies in the fact that after all the manipulations the pebble may not sit tightly in its groove and will quickly want to, as they say, jump from its place. And it doesn’t matter at all if your ring is made with diamonds, with topaz or with amethyst, it will fall out the same way, the only difference is the price.
    4. With a diamond edge. It is possible to change its size, but be prepared for the fact that it will not have the original shine, and if you choose the option of reducing without cutting out the element, then the edge may become wrinkled by the rollers.
    5. Grooved ring. Again, this task is doable. However, it is very labor-intensive, not every master will undertake it, and it is not a fact that you will be satisfied with the result.

I once again emphasize that all this can be done, but not every skilled person will undertake such a task. But what real professionals really don’t take on is costume jewelry.

Remember that even the most expensive jewelry from the world's most famous brands, such as Swarovski or Pandora, even from the Bvlgari jewelry house, is not made of precious metals, i.e. not made of gold, cannot be altered.

This applies to rings made of jewelry steel, rubber, ceramics, titanium, rhodium and cupronickel. Also, not every workshop will undertake to make a gold-plated ring, because the gold-plated layer will most likely burn during processing, but not everyone will be able to make such a coating. The same rule also applies to products with irradiated coating, i.e. It can be reduced, but not everywhere. And the price for such an alteration will most likely be more expensive than the ring itself.

    Blacksmith at home

I repeat to you every time that we ourselves are the architects of our own happiness and that almost everything is in our hands. So now I will offer some useful tips, this kind of life hacks, with the help of which you can solve minor troubles on your own at home:

My dear readers, try to solve all these subtleties with the correct choice of all the parameters of your precious “little things” before the wedding. But remember that if suddenly it is too big for you, you can reduce it. Believe only in the good! Enjoy life! Be on the wave of goodness and light. Share the article on social networks. Subscribe to my blog and, of course, leave comments on how you got out of your situation with ring sizes. And I say goodbye to you. Bye-bye and see you again!

Today, methods that allow adjust the ring to the desired size, worked to perfection.

In a jewelry workshop, such work can be completed in the presence of the customer in 10-15 minutes. The main thing is that the ring falls into the capable hands of a jeweler who has earned positive reviews for his work.

    How to reduce ring size?

To make a ring smaller, jewelers use three methods.

    • Cutting out a piece of the rim.

This method is used for rings decorated with precious stones to prevent damage to the overall structure of the jewelry. It is recommended to first remove all stones from the setting, especially when soldering the ring with an open fire.

For rings made of white gold, with enamel or mother of pearl, laser soldering is used.

If, the jeweler cuts a piece of the base 3.14 mm long, into two sizes - 6.28 mm, and then grinds and polishes the joint.

    • Filling the rim.

This method is usually used to reduce the size of wedding rings without precious stones or decorative elements.

If the ring needs to be adjusted by half a size, it is simply knocked down, and if by 1-1.5-2 sizes, it is preheated, increasing the elasticity of the metal, and then knocked down to the desired size. The carbon deposits are cleaned off and the product is polished.

    • Insertion without sawing.

The method is expensive, but eliminates all signs of impact on the decoration. The ring remains the same, only its inner diameter decreases. This happens by soldering a base metal plate or an additional ring into the inside of the product.

How to increase your ring size?

In this case, jewelers also practice three methods.

    • Boring of the rim.

The method is simple, but applicable only for rings with a thick rim that need to be increased by half a size. Its main disadvantage is the loss of ground gold, however, sometimes this method is the only way to increase the size of a complex ring with stones or decor without damage.

    • Mechanical stretching.

This method is used to increase the size of ordinary wedding and signet rings. The ring should not be too wide - no more than 10-12 mm. Thin rings are easier to stretch, even by 2 sizes, but this method is not suitable for too thin products - they may burst.

The jeweler first determines the amount by which the ring should be enlarged, then heats the product, puts it on the crossbar and, by rotating its handle, achieves the required size. At the end of the work, removes irregularities, grinds and polishes the ring.

    • Metal insert.

Or, by setting the stone, you can increase the size only by making an insert of a similar metal. The product is cut from the bottom and expanded to the required size, and a pre-prepared insert is soldered into the resulting space. Before soldering, the insert and ring are boiled in boric acid to maintain shine. After final processing, the ring looks like a single whole.

What to do if you have lost weight and your favorite ring begins to fall off your finger? Or did you see a ring in the store that is a little larger in size than you need? The easiest way to reduce the size of your ring is at a jewelry shop. But if for some reason the master refuses to accept the product for work, the situation can be corrected with improvised means.

There are three ways to size a ring. Its diameter is changed by cutting, compressing or inserting an inner rim into it.

    • Tenderloin. To reduce the ring by one size, the master cuts a piece of metal about 3 mm long from the rim. This is the way to treat a “engagement ring” or a product with small stones.
    • Compression. The jeweler heats the ring in a flame, partially cools it, and then places it in a cone and covers it with a pressing ball - a punch. Hitting the press with a hammer, he lowers the product along a tapering cone, and the pliable metal is compacted. After processing, carbon deposits are removed from the product and polished.
    • Insert. To reduce the diameter, an additional rim of the same or another metal is soldered into the ring. This is the easiest and safest way to get your jewelry adjusted to size, but it can also be the most expensive if you order the headband from the same precious metal.

Which method the master will choose for your jewelry depends on the characteristics of the ring. Smooth rings withstand any treatment; a product wider than 8 mm cannot be compressed (it will be deformed during forging); openwork - it is better to reduce it with an inner rim.

If you have your eye on an original ring that doesn’t fit, ask the seller if they do the fitting in the store (this service may be free for customers). When reduced by carving in a jewelry workshop, the removed piece is weighed and evaluated. Part of the metal will be used to seal the seam, and the rest will be returned to you or taken into account when paying for the work.

    Reducing rings with stone inserts

Remaking rings with stones is a more painstaking job than fitting engagement rings and other smooth rings. They are usually reduced by cutting. But not in every model you can simply remove the excess and solder the seam:

    • even with a slight decrease in the diameter of the tire (by 1–1.5 sizes), the frame sometimes becomes deformed, no longer tightly covers the stone, and it is easy to lose it;
    • In the place where the frame is attached, the metal may burst during processing or after some time.

Therefore, large stones are removed from the frame, and after finishing the work, the shape of the fastening is corrected. In some cases, it is necessary to cut off the frame itself, then it is soldered in place of the already reduced ring. Small stones are not removed from massive rings, but on thin ones, the inserts on the top of the rim can be left alone (for example, small diamonds arranged in a row on a gold ring).

Are you afraid that the workshop will replace your inserts? Before going there, submit the product for gemological examination, after which they will put a tag on it with a description of the stones: their number, characteristics and cost. When leaving the ring in the workshop, ask the master to cut out the fragment so as not to damage the hallmark - re-branding the item can be difficult, especially if it is antique.

Will downsizing affect the appearance of the ring?

When done correctly, the appearance of the ring does not change. But if a non-professional takes on the matter, you may end up with a flaw in your ring:

    • Some minerals do not tolerate high temperatures, and if the craftsman does not remove the stone before work, it may crack or change color when heated.
    • With a slight decrease in the diameter of the ring (by half a size or less), it becomes not perfectly round, but elliptical; If reduced by more than two and a half sizes, the center pattern and/or insert may be affected.
    • Sometimes heat treatment makes silver items lighter as the heat burns away the patina on their surface. The patina effect is returned by special treatment in a jewelry workshop or at home using improvised means, for example, iodine or sulfur ointment.
    • They can change the appearance of a ring made of several metals, for example, multi-colored gold (it is more difficult to disguise the seam on them).

When choosing a workshop where you will take the ring for alteration, ask the master what equipment he uses. The most gentle method of soldering metals is laser welding. It heats them less than gas, and the seam is thinner and neater.

    Which rings cannot be reduced?

Most jewelry shops will not undertake to fit rings made of base metals, and not at all because such work would cost less than processing a gold, silver or platinum ring. Do not argue with the master, but ask him to explain why he does not agree to help you, and most likely you will hear the following:

    • he does not know what alloy the ring is made of and cannot predict how the metal will behave when cut, heated or forged;
    • In most cases, rings made of cheap metal lose their shape and color during processing. When compressed, they crumble, turn black or green when heated, and the seam cannot be hidden by polishing;
    • After processing, some alloys oxidize and begin to release substances harmful to the skin, but there is no way to determine in advance whether this will happen to your ring.

You cannot reduce some products made of precious metals (more precisely, you should not do this). For example, when a rhodium-plated silver ring is heated, the matte coating on the surface deteriorates and will have to be restored, but it will not be possible to return it to its original appearance and color. It is difficult or impossible to reduce rings made of openwork filigree and with complex patterns.

Platinum rings are difficult to process. In order to change the diameter of such a product, special equipment is needed, and not all jewelry workshops have it. Platinum is a hard and refractory metal; a laser tool is needed to cut it, and a high-temperature crucible is used for heating and forging. In some cases, after cutting out a fragment from a platinum ring, a mark remains if the solder at the welding site is different in color or turns black.

    Reducing a ring at home

If you don't want to take your jewelry to a workshop, try adjusting it to size yourself. The easiest way to avoid losing a ring that is too loose is to put it on top of another, and the discreet bottom ring will hold the loose top ring.

If the second ring bothers you, use other ways to “fit” the jewelry more tightly onto your finger. However, before you reduce a non-precious ring at home, try to find out what alloy it is made of.

    Silicone lining

The easiest and most affordable way to make a ring smaller on your own is to glue a transparent silicone lining into it. The ring thus reduced tightly covers the phalanx and stops sliding, but at the same time its external size does not increase and it does not put pressure on neighboring fingers. Silicone does not irritate the skin and does not react with metals, and is resistant to household chemicals and cosmetics.

The ring seal is inexpensive, but it is quite difficult to buy it in stores, and not everyone can order it on AliExpress. Therefore, some women make such linings from scrap materials. Keep in mind that durable materials (for example, cable insulation) are not intended for contact with skin and can cause allergies, and safe rubber rings will last no more than a month and a half.

A compromise between store-bought and homemade lining can be sealing the ring with hot silicone from a special gun. Squeeze a line of silicone onto the inside of the ring, spread it and let dry. This tab is less durable than the finished one, but it is safe for the skin. This method is convenient for reducing rings made of alloys that are not altered in jewelry workshops.

    Nail polish

The most affordable way to size a ring is to apply several coats of clear nail polish to the inside of it. How many layers you need will have to be determined experimentally. Sometimes it is enough to coat it five to seven times, but if the ring is too large, there will be 10 to 15 layers. To avoid spoiling the work, wait until it dries after each layer. Of course, the process can take a long time, but be patient, otherwise everything will have to be redone. If over time the decoration becomes a good fit for you, the layers of varnish can be easily washed off.

However, varnish and remover will not harm only precious metals. But alloys can change color or texture, so it’s better not to experiment with them.

3D printing of a duplicate ring

If the question “is it possible to reduce the size of the decoration?” The workshop answered in the negative, but you are afraid of ruining it using homemade methods, order a duplicate ring. A specialized printing house designer will make a 3D computer model for you, and then it will be printed with transparent photopolymer on a special printer. Using the sample, the jewelry workshop will create a mold for casting and make an exact copy of the ring, but of the required size.

This technique allows you to repeat even very complex patterns or openwork rings, the size of which cannot be changed. If we are talking about a purchased product with complex details, in which you are not satisfied only with the size, then it will be made from the same metal and the same stones will be inserted into it.

However, copying a ring from a 3D model is not the cheapest way to make it fit. Therefore, it is more often used for antique rings, so as not to spoil the original.

As you can see, reducing the ring is quite simple; you don’t have to go to a workshop for this. True, this work is painstaking and requires patience.
