Stockinette stitch using circular knitting needles. How to knit and purl stitches (garter and stockinette stitches)

Stocking stitch is one of the simplest classical knitting methods. Like, hosiery is the basis of knitting - beginners only need to learn how to create knit and purl loops, as well as master yarn overs.

Hosiery knitting has been known since ancient times thanks to the knitting of a wide variety of hosiery products. However, these days it is actively used when knitting a much larger number of things from yarn. The finished pattern looks wonderful both on its own and as a background for more complex volumetric elements. Stocking stitch allows you to knit beautiful sweaters, cardigans, hats, scarves, gloves, vests and many other products.

Stocking knitting: diagram and description

A distinctive feature of stocking knitting is that it is one-sided, namely, it has a front and back side that differ in pattern. These sides are called knit and purl stitch. The front stitch consists of vertical loop columns. The purl stitch is a horizontal arc of stitches, reminiscent of a thinner, tighter garter stitch.

What stocking stitch looks like from the front and back sides.

Having understood the features of this pattern, we will consider all the possible ways of knitting loops for it, and then directly the diagrams and descriptions for beginners in knitting stocking stitch.

Methods of knitting loops

Before you start knitting this pattern, it is important to understand the methods of knitting it and choose the most suitable one for yourself.

Stocking stitch is achieved by alternating odd knit rows and even purl rows. However, you can knit both knit and purl stitches in two ways: classic and “grandmother’s”.

Popular articles:

  • Knit stitches in the classic way

This basic method involves grabbing the front side of the loop on the front side.

  • Face loops in a non-classical way

This is a method, also called “grandmother’s”, when for knitting stockinette stitch a loop is knitted with a grip on the back wall.

  • Purl loops in the classic way

In this case, the hinges are grabbed onto the back wall (see photo of the diagram above).

  • Purl loops in a non-classical way

With grandma’s method for knitting stockinette stitch, the purl stitches are caught at the back side.

Master class for beginners

How is stockinette knitting knitted and what is the easiest way for beginners to master it? A master class on knitting stocking stitch with knitting needles will help beginners understand the specifics of knitting this simple pattern.

Step-by-step knitting pattern for stocking stitch:

We put the loops on the knitting needle and knit the first (front) row with the front loops. We are turning the work around. Remove the first loop without knitting.

We will knit the second (purl) row with purl stitches. Insert the right needle into the middle of the loop on the left needle. The working thread should be located in front of the knitting needle (photo 1).

Using the right knitting needle, we pick up the working thread and wrap it around the knitting needle, making a circular motion clockwise (photo 2).

Pull the working thread through the loop from top to bottom, holding the thread with the thumb of your left hand (photo 3).

Pull out a new loop (photo 4).

We throw off the old loop from the left knitting needle. We continue this way until the end of the row (photo 5).

Turn the work to the front side again. We see that the first loop of the row is the front one. To form a pigtail edge, you also need to remove it, just like we removed the first purl loop, but you need to do it differently. We insert the right knitting needle from left to right behind the front wall of the loop (photo 6).

We adjust the size of the edge loops by tightening the working thread. It is necessary to ensure that the edge is smooth and not too loose, but also does not pull the side edge (photo 7).

Important: To form an edge in the form of a pigtail, remove the first loop of the row, if it is a front loop, without knitting the loops by the front smelt.

We continue to knit further: front (odd) rows with front loops, and purl (even) rows with purl loops. The result is a fabric knitted in stockinette stitch, which is also known as stockinette stitch or jersey stitch. A characteristic feature is a different pattern on the front and back sides (photos 8 and 9).

Video lesson

A video tutorial will help beginning knitters master the knitting process faster. It is especially useful to see how the pattern is knitted in all the ways that we talked about earlier, because this will make it easier to choose the most convenient knitting option for yourself.

Stocking knitting - video:

The most standard and simplest knitting technique, but no less popular and beautiful, is stockinette stitch using knitting needles, or stockinette stitch in other words. Usually, this is where acquaintance with knitting needles and threads begins.

Absolutely universal, stockinette stitch is great for knitting a scarf, sweater, hat, etc. Of course, it will have to be diluted with an elastic band, but it can form the basis of almost any product.

Using stockinette stitch, you can knit colored pictures and patterns - you just need to find suitable patterns and select multi-colored threads.

We study the creation of stockinette stitch with knitting needles: the basics of knitting

Stocking knitting is simple and unpretentious to perform; it does not require remembering a lot of ordered steps, and your hands quickly get used to it and remember the work. So how to knit in stockinette stitch? The answer is simple - in rows alternately:

  1. The first row is knitted with facial loops;
  2. Purl the second row;
  3. The third row is knit again;
  4. Purl the fourth row, etc.

You should always end the row with an edge loop.

Detailed description of stocking knitting techniques.

Products made from stockinette stitch always have two sides – front and back, so it’s quite difficult to get confused with the rows. For a better understanding, here is a step-by-step master class and the corresponding stocking stitch pattern:

1. We cast on the required number of loops with two edge loops, pull out one knitting needle;

2. Turn the work over and remove one edge on the right knitting needle;

3. We knit the first knit stitch in the classic way. To do this, the working thread must be placed behind the work, with the right knitting needle, thread a loop on the left one and pull the thread through it. The right needle should go into the loop from above its right edge - this is important.

The resulting loop should be next to the edge loop on the right needle;

5. At the end of the row, the edge loop must be knitted with a knit stitch - there is a little trick here, depending on the desired type of edge, the edge loops can be in the form of a “chain” or “knots”: in the first case, when removing the initial edge loop of the row, the working thread They are held before work, and in the second during work. The end edge rows in both cases are knitted with the front one;

6.The next row begins with removing the edge and then knitting with purl stitches. The working thread is placed in front of the work, the right knitting needle is inserted into the loop on the left in the direction from right to left under the right edge of the loop and grabs the working thread. The loop is pulled through and remains on the right knitting needle;

The fabric knitted with stockinette stitch turns out smooth and neat.

There is another way to knit facial loops - the so-called “grandmother’s method”. With it, the knitting will be more dense and with a clear pattern. To perform the “grandmother’s method” you just need to simply knit the front loops behind the back wall - the right needle is inserted into the loop behind the left needle.

This way you get a slightly different look than when knitting stockinette stitch in the classical way.

Useful tips.

When knitting a product in stockinette stitch, it is better to knit the first few rows with an elastic band or other pattern. If this is not done, the edges of the canvas will curl unsightly.

Before you start knitting any item, you need to knit a sample. Usually this is a small rectangle, sufficient to understand what density the product will have if you use specific threads and knitting needles. It may well be that after the sample, the realization will come that something needs to be changed.

To obtain a denser and clearer fabric, it is better to knit it with “grandmother’s” facial loops.

You can use satin stitch to knit items in the round - socks, mittens, snoods, etc. To do this you need to take special circular knitting needles.

It is very important to choose the right threads and knitting needles for each other. With the right selection, knitted items will turn out smooth and neat. However, if you choose it incorrectly, there is a high probability that the product will be too loose or too dense.

Choose stockinette stitch if you intend to depict a pattern - it is ideal for the background and will simplify the knitting process.

In order to study the process of knitting with stockinette stitch in more detail and visually, it is worth previewing photos and videos on the topic, where there is a detailed description of all the techniques.

In this lesson we will get acquainted with stockinette stitch (jersey, stockinette stitch), learn how to knit with it and decorate the edges with a “cable” edge.

Good day everyone!

Continuing our knitting lessons, today we’ll talk about the most common type of knitting - stockinette stitch. This knitting is otherwise called stockinette and jersey.

Knitting in stockinette stitch is simple: we knit the first and all odd rows with knit stitches, the second and all even rows with purl stitches.

The pattern of such knitting is given below:

Example:
We cast on 20 loops for the sample.

We remove the first loop, since it is.

We knit the second and all the rest to the end of the row with loops.

Unfold the knitting. Slip off the first stitch without knitting. We knit the second loop and all subsequent ones, except the very last one, with loops.

Knit the last stitch.

The photo shows a small sample of 4 rows. We see that the fabric knitted with stockinette stitch has two sides - front and back. Fabric knitted with stockinette stitch tends to curl, as we see in the photo, so it is often complemented in products.

Hello, dear readers and visitors of my blog!

Many people ask questions: “How to knit garter stitch with knitting needles? How to knit stockinette stitch with knitting needles? In today's article, the answers to these questions will be discussed in great detail.

First of all, you need to learn how to knit knit and purl stitches - regular and granny stitches. Having mastered knitting just these loops and having thoroughly trained your hand, you can become an ace in knitting, because there are many patterns consisting of only knit and purl loops!

So, if you don’t yet know how to do garter and stocking stitches, feel free (if you don’t know how, follow the link highlighted in blue) and let’s start learning!

Before starting to knit each row, do not forget to slip the first loop (edge) from the left needle to the right without knitting (as in the figure below).

We'll talk in more detail at the next knitting lesson.

How to knit facial loops

Depending on how to knit facial loops, they are called classic (1st method) and “GRANDMOTHER’S” (2nd method).

The classic knit stitch (Fig. 1) is always knitted behind the front wall ,

"grandmother's" facial (Fig. 2) - behind the back wall .

That's the whole difference! Knitting only knit stitches in all rows (either classic or “grandmother’s”, but under no circumstances mixing them) , we will get shawl stitch.

In the old days, garter stitch, or garter knitting, was called “gross stitch”, “grouse stitch”, “rope stitch”, “bed stitch”. In Russia they knitted scarves, hence the name “garter stitch”.

Nowadays, garter stitch is used not only for making scarves, but also for knitting almost all products, both entirely and in combination with other patterns.

Garter stitch is a double-sided knitting pattern (it looks the same on both the front and back sides), so it is often used when knitting scarves, hats, belts, trims, collars, where the wrong side is visible.

If garter stitch is done with thin threads on thick knitting needles, we will get a loose, almost openwork fabric. This technique can be used when knitting summer clothes and shawls.

Garter stitch made from colored stripes looks very nice (photo below). It is obtained by knitting two rows of each color of yarn - knit and purl with knit stitches. True, the pattern we have is one-sided.

The first photo shows the front side of this pattern, and the second shows the back side.

Garter stitch, made with classic knit stitches behind the FRONT wall, is used most often in knitting.

But if you need to get a tighter knitting, “grandmother’s” knit stitches are knitted behind the BACK wall. Although in this case it is not very convenient to knit them, and I never use this method.

Garter stitch can also be done using only purl stitches, only the structure of the fabric with this method of knitting becomes looser and wider, no matter how tightly we knit it. And it’s much more convenient to knit garter stitch with knit stitches.

How to knit purl stitches

How to knit purl stitches? Same as facial ones:

classic

and “granny” loops.

But it is IMPORTANT to remember:

  • a purl loop made in the classical way corresponds to a classic knit stitch;
  • The purl loop made in the “grandmother’s” way corresponds to the “grandmother’s” front loop.

Otherwise, we risk getting , which are also used in knitting, but not so often.

The video that I selected to reinforce the lesson will help you better understand how to knit knit and purl stitches in the classic and “grandmother’s” way.

Stockinet

How to knit knit and purl stitch

We get stockinette stitch (stocking stitch) if we knit one side of the product with knit stitches and the other with purl stitches. This is a one-sided knitting, having both a front and a back side.

The right side of stockinette knitting is called KIT STITCH.

Wrong side - RURAL STAIN STITCH, which resembles garter stitch, but looks smoother and smaller.

Although stocking stitch came to us from ancient times, it never goes out of fashion. Knitting is universal, as it is suitable for almost all products: men's, women's and children's.

The smooth surface of stocking stitch allows it to be used as a background for openwork and convex patterns, for ornaments and embroidery.

In this tutorial I will show you how to knit a purl stitch and a knit stitch. This type of knitting is also called stocking.

Purl is the second stitch in knitting. The first, as you remember, is the front loop.

Knowing how to knit knit and purl stitches, you can knit a great variety of patterns and products that use a combination of only these loops.

The purl loop, like the front loop, can be knitted in the classic and “granny” way.

Just like in the front classic loop, in the classic purl loop the right wall of the loop is located in front.

For me personally, knitting a purl stitch using the “grandmother’s” method is somewhat easier than the classic way. In general, the purl loop requires somewhat more strength and patience to master than the front loop. But I am sure that you have enough desire to achieve the desired result, which means everything will definitely work out!

Purl loops in the classic way

Purl stitches in the "grandmother's" way

We make a cast-on row and knit the first (front) row with facial loops, as we did in MK about facial loops. We are turning the work around. Remove the first loop without knitting.

Schematic knitting of a purl loop "grandmother's way"

If you understand how knit and purl stitches are knitted, then you can knit the fabric with stockinette stitch or as it is called stockinette knitting.

Front stitch

To do this, you need to make a cast-on row, knit the first row (front side) with knit stitches, and the second row (wrong side) with purl loops.

So, continuing to alternate the front and back rows, you need to knit as many as you need.

To get an even braid along the edge, when knitting each row, you need to remove the first loop (edge) without knitting, and always knit the last loop (it is also called an edge loop).

Let me tell you right away that some people do things differently. For example, the last stitch is always purled, the first stitch is always knitted. But that doesn't matter in this case.

Our task is to get a pigtail along the edge and we got it. Look here.

And here is the result of my MK
