What is highlighter for and how to use it. Highlighter

Looking at photographs of models in magazines, we have long ceased to be surprised by their fabulous beauty - you can’t draw something like that in Photoshop. But what is the secret of the incredible beauties from the videos? Their faces are fresh, young and seem to glow from within! In fact, everything is simple, and you can achieve this effect yourself if you have a highlighter on hand. What is a highlighter, how to use it, which brand to choose - you will find the answers to these questions in this article.

It’s easy to get lost in the buzzwords that makeup artists skillfully juggle. As soon as you remember one thing, something else has already appeared. Highlighter is another new product in the beauty industry, which is designed to make women's faces even more beautiful. From English, highlighter literally translates as “marker,” i.e., an object that highlights important things with color. This is also its principle of action in makeup.

With the help of a highlighter, having some experience and dexterity, it is easy to place color accents where necessary, diverting attention from problem areas.

When foundation and powder are used in daily makeup, they visually smooth out the face and it becomes like a lifeless mask. Natural curves are hidden, causing the face to lose its expressiveness. A highlighter can solve this problem. It makes the look more open, outlines the cheekbones, like Angelina Jolie, gives the lips some swelling, and the eyebrows an additional curve.

  1. It is indispensable in cases where an important event is planned for the evening, and traces of fatigue are already visible on the face after a long day.
  2. It looks great in photographs, and therefore will come in handy when preparing for a photo shoot.
  3. Highlighter can also be used in everyday makeup, but in moderation so that you don’t get the impression that you’re expecting the president to arrive any minute.

A fashionable novelty can work wonders. But only if you use it correctly. Otherwise, highlighter can easily and naturally ruin the proportions of the face, highlight problem areas, or give the skin an unhealthy look. Of course, you need to use it carefully, having previously familiarized yourself with the intricacies of the work and the rules of application.

How to use highlighter for face?

Highlighter is considered one of the final makeup products that sets its final accents. If the skin is not ideal, then before using it it is advisable to apply a foundation as a base. This is a mandatory step for girls with oily skin. It is better for them to use a foundation with a mattifying effect, otherwise the shining areas risk turning into greasy spots. Young girls with smooth, healthy skin do not need to apply foundation. It is enough to cleanse the skin and use a moisturizer. Neither powder nor foundation is usually applied on top of the highlighter.

The highlighter itself is traditionally applied to the protruding parts, creating a glowing effect. To get this result, it is important to know how to properly apply highlighter to your face. Imagine that the sun is shining on you, which areas of your face will it touch first?

  • dorsum of the nose;
  • upper cheekbones;
  • convex area of eyebrows;
  • middle of forehead;
  • hollows above the upper lip.

It is precisely on these areas that highlighter is applied. It is also used on the inside of the eyelid to change the shape of the eyes and give the look freshness and mischief.

How to apply highlighter to your face?

There are different types of highlighters, and a practicing makeup artist usually has several of them, because some are more convenient to apply with thin lines, others with wide, sweeping movements. Naturally, in an ordinary cosmetic bag there is traditionally one, maximum for highlighter. But regardless of the type, apply it carefully, and then shade it, giving the skin a natural shine.

So, we already understand where to apply highlighter. It remains to figure out what effect can be achieved in each specific case. With this new product, the main thing is not to overdo it. There is no point in lightening all areas of your daily makeup; one or two are enough and your face will immediately become fresh and younger.

Eyes

Deep-set or small and narrow eyes will appear larger if you apply a sparkling white stripe to the middle of the eyelid. When you want to visually distance your too close-set eyes from each other, place light accents in their outer corners.

Brows

To visually lift your eyebrows and make your look a little more open, you can apply highlighter under the brow line. Be guided by their shape and use the product only on the area that you would like to make more expressive (for example, under corners that are too low).

You should not resort to this cosmetic trick if your eyelids droop a little over your eyes. This will only draw attention to this feature.

Nose

Apply the product to the bridge of your nose only if it is perfectly straight. Any curvature will only become even more noticeable after lightening. But with the help of a highlighter you can make a wide nose visually narrower. But it’s easy to add a couple of millimeters to a snub nose by applying the product to its wings.

Cheekbones

This is the most successful and popular place to apply highlighter. If you are not particularly versed in the intricacies of makeup, then you can leave it at that. Just place accents on the highest points of your cheekbones and your face will become more expressive.

Lips

The amazing secret is highlighting Cupid's bow. This is the dimple above the upper lip, which, when lightened, miraculously makes the lips full and juicy. No man likes lipstick on a woman's lips. Do you want to seduce your loved one? This trick is sure to draw attention to your lips while keeping them looking natural.

Types of highlighters

Like foundations, eye shadows and lipsticks, highlighters come in several forms. Different textures and methods of application make one or another type most convenient for use on different parts of the face and achieving different goals.

Highlighter pen

A very convenient option for lightening small areas - the corners of the eyes, the areas above and below the eyebrow. A thin brush through which the product is squeezed gently and evenly distributes the highlighter over the skin. The consistency is similar to a foundation with shimmery flecks. This form is convenient for constant carrying in a cosmetic bag - the tightly closing lid will not allow the product to leak out under any circumstances.

Liquid highlighter

Most often in this form the product is found in small glass bottles, like nail polish. Sometimes you can find it in tubes and bottles with a dispenser. This highlighter is the easiest way to create the effect of dewy skin. It spreads very easily and covers the face like a light veil. To apply, you can use an applicator brush, sponge or just your fingertips.

Compact palette

This product looks like regular eyeshadow. The palette can contain just a couple of colors or a whole dozen. This highlighter is applied with a wide brush to large areas and a small one to the area near the eyes.

Shimmering balls

Amazing product! In the box, the shimmer balls look like small, sparkling grains of fairy elf pollen, which they use to dust their wings. Usually the package contains balls of several colors, but when applied with a wide brush they give an even, beautiful shade. It is convenient to use this product on the cheekbones, chin and forehead. For application to small areas, it is better to choose something else.

Shimmer powder

Loose in a box with a puff or in a denser form, such powder is applied with a brush of a convenient width to a particular area. This product is convenient to use at home, but taking it with you is not too much.

Loose powder brush

The trick of this product is that the shimmering powder is located in the cavity of the brush handle. Otherwise, this highlighter is no different from traditional powder.

Cream highlighter

The product can be found in the form of sticks (“lipstick” packaging). This product creates a very delicate coverage and is suitable for carefully delineating individual areas.

Highlighter brands

Every self-respecting cosmetic brand produces at least one highlighter, or even several types at once. It’s easy to get lost in the choice. Which brand should you prefer?

L'Oreal

This French company produces liquid highlighter in a 30 ml tube with a narrow spout. The color range of the product is presented in three shades: shining pearl, shining gold and natural pink. It contains many shimmering particles that give the skin a delightful, truly pearly glow. The product has almost no smell, but has amazing durability. The cost ranges from 600 rubles.

L'Oreal's catalogs also include a solid highlighter, consisting of three colors, and an excellent highlighter pen in a shining gold design.

MAC

From this legendary company you can find the product under discussion in two types - in the form of a compact pressed powder or in the form of a pen. Both products have a long shelf life, and the powder also has an impressive volume - it will last until the end of your life. The powder is not crumbly, but has a certain creamy effect; it applies evenly even with your fingers and does not crumble. You shouldn't expect ultra-shine from the product. But it is ideal for daily make-up. Only the price is “biting” - you will have to pay about 2,500 rubles for beauty.

Maybelline

The brand pampers its fans and offers them highlighter in liquid and cream form. Both products create a pleasant, unobtrusive glow and are sold in Russia in two shades - pink and golden. They do not contain large shiny particles, so they can be an excellent solution even for daily use.

The elegant black packaging beckons, and the prices are pleasing - depending on the place of purchase, the product will cost from 500 to 650 rubles.

Nyx

The cosmetics brand has seriously hit the production of shining products. There are 9 shades of cream highlighters alone (3 each for warm, cool and neutral). Volume 6.8 - excellent! Any girl alone will not be able to use a larger amount.

Nyx offers a whole palette of illuminators with seven shades. There is also blue in it, because now rainbow lights are fashionable. The quality of the product is excellent - a dense highlighter, without large shimmer, which allows you to create both a slight glow and a good “wet” effect.

Another highlighter option from Nyx is a stick of a delightfully soft, cool pink shade. It's the only color option, but it's just wonderful and versatile. Weight 5 grams, price about 700 rubles.

The brand also has a solid highlighter in five shades. Quite dense, difficult to pick up with both natural and synthetic brushes, but it goes on with an even, damp sheen.

Lancome

No, this is just something incredible! In the new spring collection, Lancome presented a highlighter in the shape of a rose... So natural that it is simply indistinguishable from a living one. Having one on your dressing table is a fabulous pleasure. The product has a powdery consistency, is easy to apply with a brush and shines with a delicate pink glow. But the price will break the ladies' hearts - about $60 apiece.

The brand also has old highlighters of various shades in the form of baked powder. But after the release of a stellar new product, I don’t even want to look at them.

Mary Lou

Mischievous Mary Lou turned out to be not a greedy girl at all. She presented only two shades of powder highlighters - pink and gold. But the volume is pleasantly surprising - as much as 8.5 grams, which is a lot for a highlighter. The texture of the product is soft, it simply melts under your fingers, which may cause problems with distribution over the skin at first. It is important not to take too much, otherwise your face will shine with an oily sheen. But with some practice you can create a very delicate glow.

Dior

Dior is so Dior! The French highlighter is released in powder form. The packaging, as always, is beyond praise. Previously, the product was produced in one color, now there are two of them and both have been added to the main collection - already bestsellers! Quite a weighty, monumental box, soft brush. You can feel the style and unique charm in everything. The filling, of course, is also excellent. Soft, creamy texture, not chalky. Gives an even pink-beige shade. When applied for the first time, it leaves a slight shine, but with the second and third layers you can easily achieve the “seen from the moon” effect.

Weight is 6.5 grams, it is used sparingly, which is not good news at a price of almost 4,000 rubles.

Catrice

The famous brand also decided that one highlighter is not enough. That’s why in his collections you can find both pen and loose and compact powders. All three options shade very softly, do not fall off and are quite durable. The latest compact powder highlighter released looks like a mosaic of cool tones. But it gives a pleasant calm glow to the skin.

Essence

We can talk a lot about classic highlighters, of which Essence has plenty (powder, stick, and pencil). But why? If the new product simply eclipsed all its predecessors. This compact powder consists of 4 colors - blue, yellow, bronze and red. Wow! It shines with a translucent, delicate, even light on the face. Despite its extravagant appearance, the product can be safely used daily. The price is more than affordable - about 300 rubles.

Mary Kay

This company offers fans three types of highlighters in sticks and baked powder. Sticks - gold, bronze and silver - will give the skin a calm, not intense glow. And the powder will create a slightly brighter image. For application, you can use either a highlighter brush or just your fingers.

Benefit

And here it is - a completely liquid highlighter. Benefit makes it in pink, bronze and natural colors. The thin brush is very easy to take out and apply the product. There are no difficulties with shading either. At the same time, this packaging option is not the most ideal. The product may dry out on the neck. It is also inconvenient to remove the residue when the brush can no longer handle it.

Eva

Eva presents a classic highlighter in the form of a compact powder, but all brands have such products. Therefore, it’s better to focus on another product from her catalog - a pencil. It is very easy to apply, ideal for constant wear in your cosmetic bag and will touch up your makeup in just a couple of seconds.

What's the difference between highlighter and concealer?

It's almost impossible to keep up with the fashion industry. But we'll try. Turning to a free translation, you can find out that the word “highlighter,” as we have already figured out, means “to highlight with color.” “Concealer” has the completely opposite meaning - “to hide.” Likewise, the tasks that are solved in makeup with their help are radically different.

  1. Highlighters are designed to highlight winning areas, and concealers are designed to hide problem areas. The first can, due to reflective particles, make the skin radiant, healthy and fresh. The latter cover pimples, rosacea, inflamed areas, and circles under the eyes with a thin masking layer.
  2. The palette of highlighters is rich - from white to bronze. But the colors of concealers are even more varied. Here there are green, and purple, and yellow... It all depends on what color your “problem” is.
  3. The consistency of the highlighter is light and translucent. The concealer is thick and opaque.
  4. The highlighter contains reflective particles that create a shimmering effect. Concealers, on the contrary, are matte so as not to draw attention to skin imperfections.

What's the difference between highlighter and bronzer?

Everything here is very simple and there is nothing to get confused about. Highlighter is the gentle glow of the sun on the skin, bronzer is the effect of tanning. The latter product is also available in various forms (sticks, powders, pencils), and is applied to the antagonist areas of the highlighter. For example, to make your nose narrower, apply highlighter to the back and bronzer to the sides.

Bronzers can also contain shimmer particles, and some highlighter palettes contain unusual dark shades. This is where confusion sometimes arises as to what is what. And if we are already quite familiar with the functions of the highlighter, then we can say a few words separately about how to use the bronzer.

So, with its help you can:

  • give your face and décolleté a tanned look at any time of the year;
  • disguise blue circles, pallor, spots on the skin;
  • sculpt facial features (hide chubby cheeks, change the oval);
  • just replace blush in your daily makeup.

Apply the bronzer, like its highlighter counterpart, on top of the foundation. But you shouldn’t experiment and use it instead of a base - you’ll end up with a wax mask.

With some experience, you can successfully combine both cosmetics in one make-up, creating the face of a real Greek goddess.

Having looked at the range of highlighters, what catches your eye is the crazy difference in pricing. However, in the average price category you can easily find a quality product that will last you at least one and a half to two years (unless, of course, you cover the entire surface of your face with it every day).

  1. Once you have decided on the price range, evaluate your skin type. Oily epidermis generally doesn’t like highlighters too much, but if you really want it, choose one of the loose powders or meteorites. The creamy texture and oily sticks will be useful for dry skin, and liquid products - for normal skin.
  2. Next you will have to deal with the color type. The “porcelain” skin of a true English lady will glow after applying a silver or pink highlighter. A bronze shade looks advantageous on a dark complexion, and a golden shade on an olive complexion. A peach highlighter will help give yellowish skin a healthy look.

By the way, if you don’t have a fashionable product, look in your cosmetic bag for pearlescent shadows of the corresponding shade. They will easily replace it - no one will notice the substitution. Of course, the quality of the product must be high, otherwise the shadows will instantly fall off.

It turns out that “painting” a face radiant with health and youth is a piece of cake if you have a highlighter on hand. Choose, learn and be beautiful!

Highlighter is a cosmetic product whose main purpose is to “attract” light rays and reflect them, creating the illusion of skin illuminated from within.

Where did it all start? From the history of highlighter

Highlighter with an HD effect usually contains reflective components that diffuse the light. It gives you a photoshop effect, so use it as a base for your foundation to create perfect skin.

To understand how large glitter the highlighter contains, apply the product to the back of your hand and blend to zero. A product with a satin effect will disappear without a trace, while a highlighter with shimmer will leave sparkles.

Highlighter and concealer: what's the difference?

Even though highlighter and concealer are products intended for different purposes, they are often confused. Concealer is a foundation that helps hide skin imperfections: dark circles and “bruises” under the eyes, age spots and local redness (we discussed the properties of concealer in more detail in a separate section).

If you use highlighter for the same purpose, it will only make the problem worse. To ensure that both makeup products look appropriate and complement each other, first apply concealer, and then highlight the prominent points of the face with highlighter.

However, there are situations when a concealer or corrector can take on the role of a highlighter. If you accidentally bought a concealer or corrector that is too light, use it to highlight your cheekbones, highlight the corners of your eyes, or visually narrow your nose.

Types of highlighter

Liquid, cream or dry: how do you know which highlighter is right for you? Read the recommendations below.

Liquid highlighter

If you are just starting to use highlighter and are afraid to apply too much, give preference to this product format: it is not so easy to overdo it. You can also mix liquid highlighter with foundation for the most natural look. Liquid highlighter is also indispensable for creating the effect of dewy skin. However, please note that this texture is incompatible with powder products.

Highlighting serum

The highlighting serum is ideal for girls with dry skin, as this product perfectly moisturizes.

Cream highlighter

Cream highlighter is designed to “treat” large areas of the face. It is more convenient for them to correct the cheekbones, nose and jawline. It absorbs well and stays on the skin for a long time.

It should be applied with your finger or a cosmetic sponge over foundation. Often such cream products are produced in the form of highlighter palettes with different shades: this multifunctional product can replace highlighter, blush, and even eye shadow.

Dry highlighter

Their structure is more similar to mineral powder. Ideal for girls with oily skin (we wrote about other nuances of using highlighter in this case).

Dry highlighters can be applied either over regular powder or over foundation. It can also highlight cheekbones, nose, eyes, lips - it will look appropriate in any type of makeup.

Highlighter pencil

Highlighter in the form of a pencil or stick is one of the most convenient options for contouring the face. It is easy to apply and shade. And thanks to its convenient format, it fits in any handbag.

Products with highlighting effect

If you don’t have a highlighter on hand, you can replace it with some other products, one of which will definitely be in your cosmetic bag. Or do exactly the opposite: use your highlighter as eye shadow, blush or powder.

Shadow highlighter

If you want to add a little sparkle to your eyes and highlight them, use eye shadow with a highlighting effect. They usually have a peach or silver tint.

Place a small amount of pigment on the applicator or you can apply the pigment directly with your fingers. Blend all over the eyelid or along the lash line. Highlighters with gold particles are especially suitable for girls with blue eyes.

You can also blend them onto the top of your cheeks or add them to the area under your eyebrows.

Corrector-highlighter

We have already told you that a corrector or concealer is not at all the same as a highlighter, and their functions are completely different. But there is one area where one product can really replace another: use a concealer a shade or two lighter than your skin to “highlight” the high points of your face. In addition, you can trust the unique Touche Éclat concealer-highlighter from YSL.

Initially, shimmering particles are included in the composition in order to use light reflection to distract attention from skin imperfections. But they also allow you to use such concealers instead of highlighter.

Blush highlighter

Blush with radiant particles is a great solution to make your face fresh in a couple of seconds. In this case, the shade of blush should be chosen based on. A universal option is blush in delicate pink and peach tones, which will help give a delicate color to your skin and hide fatigue.

Bronzer

Bronzer allows you to give your skin a tan effect. In addition, there are bronzers with a highlighting effect that will help correct certain areas of the face.

Bronzers can also be applied to the body. To give a more natural shade, it is better to mix it with your body cream. By the way, you can learn how to make your face more tanned from this video:

Powder highlighter

To lighten individual areas of the skin, apply highlighting powder in several layers, or spread a thin layer over the entire face. It is distributed in a thin layer and does not look unnatural. A worthy option is the best-selling Studio Master Sculpt from Maybelline. The product helps create a subtle glow on the skin. The set also includes a dark sculpting product and a brush.

Lipstick with shine effect

Lipsticks in light shades (from pale pink to peach) with shining particles can be used as a highlighter. Apply it in the same way as any other highlighter stick. A great example is lipstick from the Vice collection from Urban Decay in the shade Bobby Dazzle.

Strobing with highlighter

Strobing is a fashionable makeup technique, the main task is to give the face a healthy and radiant look by carefully highlighting the prominent areas with a highlighter. Find instructions on how to repeat this look in our video.

Another beauty fad that involves using highlighter is shoulder strobing. Read more about this trend.

Highlighter is a cosmetic product that can completely change your appearance. If we use it, we will get a radiant and fresh face. We suggest considering how to apply highlighter to a round face, as well as rectangular and square ones, and what brush to use.

How to choose the right highlighter

When you choose a marker, you need to take into account the color of your skin; if it is very dark, then pink tinting pencils are suitable; by the way, the same shades are also suitable for pale skin (perhaps this is the only type of decorative cosmetics that can be used on radically different color types). For beige dermis, we recommend a creamy color - salmon.

The purpose of using highlighter is to achieve reflective light, color, and a dewy appearance to the dermis, which will help you look significantly younger and fresher. But often tinting pencils can create an oily sheen on the skin, so first blend it in the store on the back of your hand to eliminate the possibility of such an effect in the future.

There are certain types of highlighters:

  • liquid (cream);
  • dry (like powder, powder);
  • relatively soft, but not liquid (pencil (the most common, very good line from YSL, Mary Kay and Shiseido).

Video: what is a highlighter and how to use it

Application principles

There are several main directions on how to apply highlighter correctly:

  • cheekbones;
  • brows;
  • chin;
  • eyes;
  • hollow above the lip.

You cannot use the illuminator on the entire face at once, so you need to first decide on which part we will use this pencil.

Also, if we are talking about a cream highlighter, then we need to decide what brush apply it. A wide one is suitable for shading along the décolleté, neck or forehead, but for “jewelry” work you need to use a small brush made of natural wool.

Now decide on the shade, the ideal shade will not always be right in the package, it is likely that you will have to mix several colors, so we take a small amount of one tinting product on a brush, after a little of the second shade, and apply them to the face, and then mix them directly on the skin.

When applying it on the cheeks, you need to mix it at the highest point of the cheekbone and move up to the temple. This is especially important if you are making any contour that should draw attention to the shadows of the makeup; Kim Kardashian often uses this method.

Photo - Highlighter on a round face

When applying it before our eyes, blend highlighters under the brow bone, on the brow bone and in the inner crease of the eyelid. The reflection of light on the inner fold will open the eyes and forehead, which in turn will produce a visual lifting effect.

Applying a tinting pencil on the lips, you can get huge results. Before using lipstick, apply several shades of highlighter in the crease above the upper lip and the center point under the lower lip. It will look ugly in the initial stage, but as soon as you apply the lipstick, your lips will have a uniform shine effect that will visually enlarge them and add sensuality to the overall look.

Photo - Before and after applying highlighter

You can also apply highlighter bridge of the nose in order to visually correct the nose somewhat, but be careful, you do not need to paint the entire length of the nose with a tinting marker, otherwise you will just get a light spot and not a clearly defined contour.

What not to do with highlighter

Before creating a specific look, it is important to know how not to apply highlighter. There are a number of “cautions”:

  1. Don't try to use a full-coverage pencil instead of foundation, especially on areas of pigmentation or redness. Shimmery shades will only serve to draw attention to the problem area.
  2. Liquid highlighter tends to reflect light, but it must be used extremely sparingly and carefully.
  3. You should always apply highlighter to powder or blush, after foundation or applying tinted moisturizer, but before.
  4. Also, the texture of the highlighter should always match the base, so if you apply it, you need a cream highlighter. If you want to use a powder highlighter, you will need to apply a thin layer of translucent powder to your skin over a darker foundation.
  5. Before applying highlighter to dark skin, you need to first apply bronzer.
  6. The product should be applied to the cheekbones exactly along the same line as the blush, or a little lower, but not above them.
  7. The application diagram shown in the photo below is approximate. It varies for each face type.

Using highlighter for every face type

Photo - Facial correction using cosmetics

The rules for using highlighter are extremely simple for every face shape, you just need to shade it very well. On a round face It is necessary to pay special attention to the cheekbones and the area under the eyes; we paint it over with triangles.

If Oval face, then simply apply the same as blush - under the eyes in small circles and blend. For rectangular shape it is necessary to use semicircles under the eyes, but here square You can improve it a little with rectangular stripes under the lower eyelid.

In what cases is it appropriate to use shimmer? In any makeup that requires a contrasting combination of light and shadow, if the face is imperfect (long or wide nose, protruding chin, wrinkled forehead, etc.), if you need to refresh yourself a little (outwardly), after a sleepless night.

Hello everyone, dear readers!

Have you noticed how many new products have begun to appear in the windows of regular cosmetic stores and their online counterparts? To understand all this, you need to work hard, because each product plays its own role in makeup.

Nowadays on the Internet you can find many “before and after” photographs, where the same person is presented, only first without makeup, and then with it. After all, it's just heaven and earth. Sometimes a person’s appearance changes simply unbelievably and a person simply don't know.

Everyone, of course, decides for themselves to use one or another product, or prefer natural beauty. One of the newest means that is designed to bring our face closer to ideal, is a highlighter.

And so in this article I will try to answer the question of how to use highlighter correctly and what accessories you will need for this, as well as a little about the product itself.

In general, the word “highlighter” from English means to illuminate, highlight. You can correct it with highlighter features faces, because it perfectly highlights a particular area that needs to be brought to the fore.

The product can be used on its own or in combination with a bronzer. The second product is used in reverse for blackouts, to hide an area and shift emphasis away from it. If you use these two tools correctly, you can achieve the desired face shape that all representatives of the fair sex strive for - oval.

And probably another function of the highlighter is to give liveliness face after using various products to even out skin tone. After all, according to the canons of classic makeup, highlighter follows:

All of these products belong to decorative cosmetics, and you don’t need to apply them all together one after another in everyday life; makeup artists mainly use this arsenal. Sometimes it happens that after using all this “plaster” the face becomes like mask.

This is especially true for makeup for oily skin, when mainly mattifying products are used, accents are simply placed with a highlighter at the end, and the face immediately acquires freshness and becomes younger.

What types of highlighters are there?

This modern product is currently available in different consistencies:

  1. liquid;
  2. creamy;
  3. powders.

It is precisely for correcting the oval of the face that the first two options are best used. They are easier to apply, blend and difficult to overdo. And powder highlighters, by the way, are where it all started, are very capricious and can look unnatural on the face. It is most appropriate to use them in evening makeup, when the shining effect will only add shine to you and make you the queen of the party.

Highlighters also vary in the degree of shimmer; again, if you choose this product for everyday use, it is better to give preference to less shiny textures. They can easily vary the degree of application of the product and, accordingly, change its intensity as you want.

Of course, highlighter is available in different colors and you need to choose them according to your skin tone, for example:

  • gold - suitable for tanned skin;
  • peach - light olive and yellowish;
  • blue and lilac - pinkish skin;
  • white - intended for everyone, mainly used for the eye area.

  1. Do not start applying the product if your skin is not ready..
  2. As I already said, highlighter is the final element of decorative cosmetics in makeup. Maybe not the last, but one of them. If the skin is not ideal, then there is no need to emphasize or highlight certain areas on the face.

    Wash, tone, moisturize your face, apply any toner, and only then start using highlighter.

  3. If you have oily or combination skin, be careful.
  4. Usually, a highlighter gives a dewy finish, and if in addition to the artificial glow, your skin also shines, of course from oil, then you will look like a pancake. Not immediately, of course, but over time, oily skin begins to secrete sebaceous secretions. In this case, it is better to apply highlighter only in certain places and in a minimal amount.

    If you have combination skin, like mine, then the area for applying highlighter is slightly larger, but everything should be in moderation, and always where needed.

  5. If you haven't purchased a highlighter yet, you can practice using eye shadow in light shades.
  6. This is, of course, not an option for advanced people, but you can learn how to place accents with brilliant shades of shadows. Next, I will tell you which places need to be highlighted.

  7. Highlighter can be mixed with foundation.

In rare cases, for example, for evening glamorous makeup, you can mix highlighter into your foundation, just not 1 to 1, but 1 to 2, otherwise you will shine worse than a Christmas tree. But if you do everything correctly, your face will have a noble glow and you definitely won’t go unnoticed. Do not repeat this for girls with oily skin.

Makeup accessories

First, take care of purchasing brushes, they will be needed not only for applying highlighter, but also for shading it. Makeup artists advise using:

  • fluffy fan brush for large areas;
  • a small brush with a pointed or round cut for working on some areas;
  • duofibre, as it allows you to create weightless makeup for everyday use;
  • The kabuki brush has dense bristles and is great for blending highlighter.

I prefer to use brushes kabuki. It is best to apply highlighter first to the back of your hand, and then spread the product over your face with a brush or finger.

Step-by-step instructions for applying highlighter

It’s worth noting right away that using a highlighter is what makeup artists recommend, that is, it’s not necessary to highlight all areas, you can combine as you please. But now we will look at the complete scheme for applying this product to the face:

These are the main areas for applying highlighter, which will help visually correct your facial features. After applying the product, do not forget to blend it well with a brush, this will make your makeup more natural. Wash your accessories as often as possible.

I mainly apply highlighter to my cheekbones and inner corners of my eyes and that's enough for me. I'm careful because I have combination skin.

By the way, the highlighter in the form is very convenient to use stick or pencil, it is applied with light strokes and lightly shaded with your fingers. But this option is more suitable for dry skin types.

The time for dullness is over; moist, shiny skin is now at the peak of popularity. This kind of makeup rejuvenates, but it is not always possible to achieve its durability.

In the following video, a professional makeup artist explains in great detail where highlighter and bronzer are applied. Therefore, I advise you to watch it.

This concludes my story. Try it, and perhaps not right away, but over time you will learn to create the ideal and desired image of yourself. Happy Halloween everyone! What better time than today to experiment with makeup and not look like a black sheep!

The task of a highlighter is to highlight certain areas of the face, giving it relief. If you know the basics of its use, then a highlighter can give your face the effect of an inner glow, and make your facial skin visually fresh and toned. We suggest you figure out how to use highlighter for the face so that you look 100%:

The fashion trend for using highlighter came to Russia about two years ago. Brands from all leading cosmetics companies have released lines of new products. There were many followers of the beauty trend, but not everyone’s first experience of using the new product was successful. Highlighter was confused with concealer, the wrong type and tone were chosen, and cosmetics were applied to the wrong areas of the face. Of course, it didn't look quite as it should have.

The most versatile highlighter color is beige. The key rule is that the tone of the radiant coating should be slightly lighter than the color of the skin. Otherwise, if the product is too dark, it will look like bronzer applied to the wrong area.

Meanwhile, in addition to the universal beige color, there is a wide palette of shades: from white to purple. When choosing a colored highlighter, makeup artists recommend using the following recommendations:

  • Champagne, pearl, mother-of-pearl shades are suitable for girls with pale skin;
  • Rose gold, soft pink - ideal for medium to olive complexions;
  • Golden, copper, bronze look impressive on dark and tanned skin;
  • Purple and cool pink are suitable for skin prone to redness (when applying a contrasting shade, the red tone will be masked);
  • Peach is recommended if the face has a yellowish tint.

There are the following types of highlighter:

  • liquid,
  • creamy,
  • crumbly,
  • compact,
  • hard in the form of a soft pencil.

“The choice of product depends on your skin type. For dry or mature skin, liquid or cream products are best. This helps to moisturize the face and give the most natural glow. Those with oily or combination skin are advised to use dry powder products,” says Kerry Cole, style director at BECCA, on how to use a highlighter for the face.

Note that other cosmetics can also act as a highlighter. For example, neutral lipstick or eye shadow. You can see how shadows used as a highlighter look on the face in ours.

  • Brows. A little highlighter can be applied both above and below the eyebrows. The lower underlining will visually raise the eyebrows, and the upper underlining will give the face relief.
  • Inner corner of the eye. This makes the eyes shine and gives the face a cheerful look in the morning. By the way, a drop of white highlighter in the inner corners of the eyes is one of the beauty tricks that was implemented at the Calvin Klein show during New York Fashion Week in February 2017. • Upper part of the cheekbone. The highlighter is applied in a crescent shape to the prominent part of the upper cheekbones (under the eyes). Pearlescent particles catch and reflect light, which makes the skin visually more toned. The radiant product can be mixed with blush. This will create a rosy glow on the apples of your cheeks.
  • Upper lip. The gloss is applied pointwise to the center, on a line along the contour in the middle of the upper lip. This makes an accent and visually gives volume to the upper lip. To add volume to the lower lip, the highlighter is applied pointwise in the middle.
  • Forehead. To imitate a sun glare on the forehead, the product is applied to the central part of the forehead and shaded. It is recommended to choose a highlighter for this area.
  • no shimmer or iridescent effect to avoid the illusion of a greasy sheen. The product should be slightly lighter than the foundation.
  • Nose. This area requires caution when using highlighter. The line between shine and shine in this case is very thin. The product is applied to the nose to highlight the central part of the face and visually lengthen the nose.

When using highlighter, it is better to be guided by the principle of minimalism. Highlighting all areas of the face at once can look excessive, especially if the product has a high degree of gloss. For a soft, delicate glow of the face with an internal glow effect, it is recommended to choose one or two zones to apply the product.

Applying highlighter is one of the last, finishing touches of makeup. It is applied after leveling the overall tone, when the surface of the face looks perfectly smooth. You can read about how to hide all skin imperfections and prepare your face for applying a glossy shine.

The technique and tool for applying highlighter depends directly on its type:

  • Liquid. Apply with a makeup sponge over foundation. If you apply this product over powder, the highlighter will be difficult to blend: it will look like a bright concentrated shining spot with clear boundaries.
  • Compact. Apply with a brush over the powder layer. This allows you to achieve a delicate shimmer. Theoretically, this highlighter can be applied to foundation, but in this case the concentration of glitter may be excessive.
  • Crumbly. Apply with a fan brush over powder. This highlighter usually has a high concentration of gloss, so it is recommended to use a brush and shake off excess before applying the glitter to the face.
  • Creamy and firm in the form of a soft pencil. Apply on foundation, you can shade the edges with a sponge or fingertips.
